Favourite Illustrator of the Day: David Roberts

Cover illustration for children's stories by Sylvia Plath, illustrated by David Roberts

I first saw David Robert's work on the cover of a book of children's stories by Sylvia Plath. I stuck a photocopy of the image by my desk, to keep me inspired. His work is witty and always a little dark. I get the strong feeling that he has a lot of fun creating his illustrations. His watercolour technique is fantastic, his paintings are vibrant and luminous, and they are beautifully detailed. (Did I mention I was a fan?)

I was delighted when I found out he was working on picture books. His sister has re-written some classic tales such as Cinderella and Little Red Riding hood, and he has illustrated them.

And I was lucky enough last year to see him at the Edinburgh Book Festival. He was very entertaining and was signing copies of Little Red, which is now shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway medal.

Here are some books he has illustrated: The covers of the Molly Moon books by Georgia Byng, Dirty Bertie books, written and illustrated by David Roberts, Cinderella: An Art Deco Love Story by Lynn Roberts and illustrated by David Roberts, Rapunzel: A Groovy Fairy Tale written by Lynn Roberts and illustrated by David Roberts, Little Red written by Lynn Roberts and illustrated by David Roberts, The Eddie Dickens Trilogy by Philip Ardagh.
